An excerpt from
"A History of the Wapwallopen Region"
by the Wapwallopen Historical Society

The fine workmanship and beauty of the hand-carved
woodwork throughout the old church led to
much speculation as to the artisan responsible.
This led to the disclosure that Daniel Walp, one
of the early settlers and founders of the church, and
also a member of the Original Building Committee in
1833, did the carving by hand.  Mr. Walp, who
died at the age of 55 in 1841, was the great-grandfather
of Mrs. Flora (Swank) Heller, wife of A. Wesley Heller.

In viewing the interior and exterior of the
Union Reformed and Lutheran Church,
we are impressed by a quiet dignity, a sturdiness,
and a well-balanced artistry and workmanship throughout.
In their zeal to provide a house of worship
the early settlers possibly built better than they knew.

The Wapwallopen Cemetery is known locally by many names...
Wapwallopen Cemetery, Old River Cemetery,
Cemetery of the Union Reformed and Lutheran Church.
The cemetery is one of the oldest in the area and dates back around 1802. There are still burials taking place at the cemetery,
however these records will be only of earlier burials
- those before 1900.
